Glorious turquoise sea laps against 14 kilometres of white, sandy beach in Tarifa. In the distance, the misty peaks of Morocco's Atlas Mountains rise up beyond the horizon.
"One of the most spectacular unspoilt stretches of golden sand in all of Spain."
There are four main beaches a short drive from us:
Bolonia (10 mins), Valdevaqueros (7 mins), Los Lances (10 mins), and Tarifa Beach (15 mins).
Pristine stretch of sandy beach
Voted the best beach in Spain in 2023, and one of the top three beaches in Europe 2022 by Condé Naste Traveller, Bolonia is a stunning bay directly south of El Aguilon. It's home to the Baelo Claudio Roman Ruins, and boasts crystalline waters, sand dunes, and long stretches of pristine beach. It's the only spot in Tarifa where kitesurfing is prohibited, so it's very tranquil and great for sunbathing. You'll often see cows on the beach.

"Sand dunes cascading to the turquoise water."
A long, wild beach
Playa Los Lances is a vast curve of sweeping sand facing the Atlantic; it takes two hours to walk from one end to the other. The Río Jara has created a large lagoon in the middle of the sand, with wooden walkways set up for wildlife spotting. The beach is divided into surf and swimming sections, with lots of beach bars and surf schools to choose from.

"One of the wildest and most beautiful of Spain's coastlines."
The New York Times
"From the water's edge, you can see Morocco and the Atlas Mountains across the Strait of Gibraltar."
Valdevaqueros is one of Europe's best kite spots. On windy days in July and August, the beach throngs with kitesurfers and windsurfers. For those who don't surf, it's great fun to watch from one of the beach bars. This stunning stretch of beach draws people from all over the world.

"It could be the sight of the glorious turquoise sea lapping a beautiful three-mile strip of white sand or the buff middle-aged guys hosing down their surfboards under a cloudless sky, but this is a scene I could embrace."
Combine with lunch & shopping
Tarifa beach (the beginning of Los Lances) is great if you want to spend the morning exploring the boutiques and cobbled streets of the old town, before an afternoon on the beach. If you have young children, head to Playa Chica. It's a tiny little beach on the Mediterranean side, so the surf is calmer and wonderful for paddling.
Restaurant: Bar El Frances (in the town)
"In autumn and spring you can watch storks and swifts passing in great columns overhead"
