INFLUENCE

Tarif ibn Malik

The Moors landed in Tarifa in 711, beginning their seven-hundred year conquest of the Iberian peninsula. Tarifa is named after Tarif ibn Malik, a military commander who led his army across the Straits from Morocco. Today, the Moorish influence on the architecture and culture in Tarifa is still visible.

September Celebrations

Every town in Spain holds a 'Feria' once a year. This week-long celebration is the highlight of the social and religious calendar. Tarifa's Feria is held at the beginning of September every year (Sunday to Sunday). Expect to see flamenco dresses, fairground rides, and lots of dancing!

Thursday is the 'Día del Caballo' (day of the horse), and one of the most popular days of the Feria. If you want to see flamenco dresses, Thursday is the day to go.

Rebujito

Try 'rebujito', a mix of sherry and lemonade, the traditional Feria drink; the barman will give you a jug and several small glasses to share with friends, old and new!

The procession of horses

The Cabalgata takes place on the first Sunday of September: a procession of around 700 horses accompany the Virgin from a chapel in Santuario to the San Mateo church in Tarifa. The 8 kilometre journey marks the beginning of the Feria, and is an incredible sight to see!
